This story takes place in Polynesia, and the main character is Mafatu, whose name means Brave Heart. However, everyone in his village scorns him and calls him Mafatu, The Boy Who Was Afraid. He is called thus because he is afraid of the ocean. Not a good thing when all the men in the village are fishermen. Mafatu decides to prove everyone wrong. He steals a canoe, and goes out to open ocean. After a couple of days, he makes it to some unknown island. It turns out; no one lives on this island. While there, he does a number of things that would increase his standing in the village. Mafatu kills a boar, builds a canoe, kills an octopus, and in the end runs from cannibals. All in all, I rate this book 4 stars.
